diaphragm valve

What is a Diaphragm Valve?

A diaphragm valve is a linear motion valve that uses a flexible diaphragm as the closing element. The diaphragm is pressed against a weir or straight-through body seat to control flow. This design isolates the valve mechanism from the process fluid, making diaphragm valves ideal for applications requiring high purity, zero contamination, and ease of cleaning.

In sanitary applications, diaphragm valves are manufactured from stainless steel 304 or 316L with mirror-polished surfaces and FDA-compliant elastomeric or PTFE diaphragms. They are the valve of choice in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and ultrapure water systems where metal-to-metal contact with the process fluid must be minimized.

Diaphragm Valve Types

Weir Type Diaphragm Valve

  • Raised weir body profile
  • Smaller diaphragm deflection
  • Longer diaphragm life
  • Better throttling control

Straight Through Diaphragm Valve

  • Full bore, minimal restriction
  • Higher flow capacity
  • Self-draining design
  • Ideal for viscous fluids

U-Type Diaphragm Valve

  • Modified weir for tank bottom
  • Complete vessel drainage
  • Zero dead space
  • CIP/SIP optimized
